Forwarding Feedback

I still feel honored and proud that people like and enjoy my creations. It's always a treat to receive feedback from my customers and I'd like to share a few of them because apart from the joy in making my pieces and selling them I really feel rewarded by my clients kind words.

-
Beautifully crafted dolls, beautifully packaged and delivered exactly as promised. As ever everything about the process has been a pure pleasure - rounded off by true quality of art and presentation.
-
I just ordered several absolutely wonderful handmade gifts and cards from Peter from his Etsy site (www.etsy.com/nl/shop/foppesacreoriginals). I'm in the US, he's NOT. They arrived in about a week with a modest shipping cost (combine your purchases to reduce the overall cost) and they are some of the most wonderful handmade delights I've ever had to give my friends for the holidays. Peter is wonderful artist and took such great and personal care of my order - sending me pictures for me to approve ahead of time.
Thank you, Peter!!!
-
Peter's work is so joyous! I can't wait to share his Christmas images on these beautiful handmade cards with my dear friends. Thank you, Peter!
-
I love the lino print 'Forever Love' and the cards! All of them make my heart warm. Foppe on the tags with wrapping smile at me. I'm so happy with it Thanks so much!

Who can resist Peters cat figures?
Wonderful handmade cards! I just love Peters work.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

A personal note to my Fans and Friends of Foppe's Acre Originals:
Normally at this time of year I would send out Christmas cards to my clients but this year I chose to do differently, I'll explain:
All of you who know me know that (my) animals are my passion and a constant source of inspiration, there would be no Foppe's Acre Originals art without them.

2013 was a difficult year for me as I lost six of my feathered friends to accidents and illnesses, to this day I still miss Hans and Grietje (geese), Solo, Suus, Sjoukje and Suki (Muscovy ducks).
We all know how much joy and love animals can give so I've decided to spend a percentage of this year's sales not on cards but donated it to people in need in the form of a flock of geese and a flock of ducks via Heifer International.

I'd like to thank you for your loyal support and interest in my work and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Foppe (the cat) and Peter.

Three Sisters

Three tiny and cute treasury boxes in Hindeloopen folk art style painted in commission for a client recently.
The client asked me if I could make three similar boxes with stylized portraits of three of her best friends on the top to be gifted at them during a Christmas party.
The client was very happy with them.
It was a fun assigment and I enjoyed every minute of it!

Cats and boxes, a purrfect match.

I'm working on a new treats box for our felines, this one will be a bit different than my latest boxes but I can't tell you more at this point. Here's a sneak preview of the little bugger that will be celebrated on the top of the box. It's a miniature (clay) version of our own lovebug Puck, isn't he sweet?

Nativity dance

Made a super short stop-motion video with my Matryoshka Nativity dolls, so you can see them in action.
Enjoy! :-)

Silent Night

Yay! I'm very excited and happy to announce the birth of a new item in my shop: my Matryoshka Nativity set of 5 nesting dolls! Aren't they cute?
I will make these to order in three days, please take note of time needed to paint and shipping time from Holland (schedule is mentioned in the header of my shop) if you want to surprise yourself or someone you love for Christmas.

Nativity

Started a new project today; Matryoshka nesting dolls.
I can already tell that it will become a Nativity scene, the angel is almost finished, she only needs a few more details before I give her an antique/distressed look.
These dolls will be done in a combination of Russian folk art and the Hindeloopen painting technique.
Isn't she cute?

12-11-13

Threesome

Yay! New item in my shop! It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
Set of three handpainted Christmas tree ornaments, meticulously painted Friesian folk art design on sweet little wooden disks, dangling from a sisal string.

Aren't they sweet?

Work in progress

It was a productive (sun)day at Foppe's Acre.
Modeled four cats and a mouse for a few new treasury boxes and painted a new item; Christmas tree ornaments Hindeloopen style (wood). The cats and the mouse need detailing and sanding before they are painted but they need to dry first, I'm planning to make a rubber mold from the left sleeping kitty for a new item I'm developing (more about that soon).

31-10-13

El Gato

'El Gato', cat treats annex catnip box (two partitions inside).
Latest addition to the ever growing collection of treasury boxes finished today. Mexican Tonala style combined with the Dutch Hindeloopen way of painting in Delft Blue (a happy three-some).

30-10-13

It's all in the details

Slowly but surely I'm getting the hang of the traditional Dutch folk art painting style of Hindeloopen.
Here's a detail of a larger treasury box in development.
I'm learning the tricks of the trade (brush strokes) and now understand what makes this style what it is (symbolism, motifs etc) in such a way that I can now start to make my own variations and desgins but still stay within the recognizable style. I'm really enjoying myself! :-)

Little Treasures

Just finished two new treasury boxes today. A cute bleu one with a sweet goose on the top (with a hint of Delft Blue) and a brown one featuring a snoozing polar bear. They are painted in a happy marriage of the Dutch folk art style called Hindeloopen and a variation on the Mexican Tonala style. Soon to be listed in my shop on Etsy!

A letter from the Pope!

Some of you may remember that when Pope Francis was just elected in March I sent him one of my Saint Francis linocuts to congratulate him with his new position and wanted to wish him success with his difficult task. Today I received a thank you letter in the Pope's name by Monsigneur Peter B. Wells from The Hague. I'm thrilled and happy that Pope Francis liked my little lino and took the effort to send a reply:-)

Folk art from the Ore Mountains

It's no secret that I love folk art, my work is heavily (of should I say heavenly) inspired by it. I highly value the honesty in constructions and simplicity in designs, I greatly admire the skills and techniques of the makers.

While searching for tiny Christmas trees to decorate my Hindloopen boxes I came across this video of a craftsman making a tree from one single peg. It takes a lot of skill to create such an intricate design and the result is breathtaking. I hope you enjoy this.

Boxing Day

Just a peek at today's work table...
I've introduced my first keepsake box (the one with the sheep on the lid) earlier this week but I'm well on my way to paint a few more.
Like the sheep box these are all painted in a traditional Dutch folk art style called 'Hindeloopen' (named after a small town in our province of Friesland). It's not my style to copy existing work (even though it's in a traditional style used by many) so I'm working on making it my own and add personal elements, like this Christmas tree that doesn't exist in this style.
I'm having a lot of fun painting these boxes and soon I will show more.

21-10-13

Counting sheep

I decided to create a few new trinket boxes, it's been a long while and after painting on canvas for the past few months I wanted to make something three dimensional again.
After the cats and the little duck it was time to portray our sweet Kerry Hill sheep Patsy.
The box is painted in a traditional Dutch/Friesian style originated in the little town of Hindeloopen (though I took the liberty to change the colors to fit my need). Patsy is modeled from air dried clay and painted in acryllic. This precious keepsake box is now available in my shop.

Right now I'm working on a few more, different sizes and shapes in different color schemes and of course with different animals on the top. Stay tuned for updates!

finished!

Portrait of Calico in the Peacock chair.
Yesterday I finished Calico's portrait and I'm very happy with the result. Since the last update I tweaked a few colors and added a bit more shading here and there. I think she's looking the part on her throne.
Last step is varnishing and send her on her way to Portland, Oregon (USA). It was a joy and a pleasure to do this commission.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

After I posted my Christmas Angel card a little while ago some of Foppe's fans have asked about the other designs. I know Christmas is still far away but to allow you a peek into my latest lino work I'm posting the card designs I have so far. I'm planning to make a lot more, in two color versions and gimmicks like the candle-card.

02-10-13

Almost there!

Portrait of Calico in the Peacock chair.
After a short break (preperations for the fairs I attended) I went back to painting today, high time to finish Calico's portrait.
I think I'm nearly there; changed the color of the background, detailed here and there and added shading to the chair and Calico herself.
I'm quite happy with today's progress, I'll put it away for a day and then add the final touches.
My client has been very patient even though we didn't set a deadline but I'm sure he can't wait to put the painting on his wall.

Foppe and Friends

Everyone who knows me and Foppe's Acre Originals know that animals are my passion and a constant factor in my artwork. Even though these pages are mainly about my paintings, linos and whatever I make with my hands I'd like to share some of my animal photos with you for a change.
I've created a video collage of some of my photos, most of the models in these pictures are our own animals but I've included some of Foppe's friends too. I hope you enjoy it!

Foppe's Acre Originals at the annual Autumn Fair in Lemmer (Friesland)

Yesterday (September 28, 2013) Foppe's Acre Originals went to the annual Autumn Fair in Lemmer (Friesland). It was a successful day for business, sun filled and lots of interest for my lino's, cards and animal photography.
The stall was filled with colorful art and photography. The whole range of linos, paintings, greeting cards and tote bags can of course be found in my shop on Etsy.
I've never payed a lot of attention to my animal photography on my blog but it's a part of my business that is growing in popularity. More photo's and stories about our life with the animals at Foppe's Acre can be found on Flickr.

Keep an eye on these pages for the announcement of the next fair!

Foppe's Acre Originals at the Fair!

Past Saturday 'Foppe's Acre Originals' attended its first fair during an indoor market in our little town. It was a great succes and perfect way to present myself and my work to a greater public. I'm already planning the next fair!

Moor printing!

Like I've mentioned before I'll be presenting my artwork on the annual fair in our little town in two weeks. I've stocked up on cards and tote bags and now it's time to print more linos.
My 'Forever Friends' lino is by far the most popular print I have on offer in my shop. I've sold out my entire batch so reprinted a new edition on handmade India White Rag paper, gave it a little more space around the image too so there are more possibilities for framing. Doesn't it look good?

Update on Calico in the Peacock chair

Today's progress.
The painting of Calico has reached its final phase. Uptill now I've been building up the 'skin' of the painting by adding layers upon layers of semi-tranparent paint, correcting colors and contrast in the process an changing details in the back and the armrests of the chair.
Next I'll be adding shades and textures.

Stay tuned for the next update!

Kiddy tote bag 'Yin Yang'

Sweet kiddy tote bag 'Yin Yang' featuring two sleeping cats (Jelle and Timmy) in a loving embrace. Digital version of one of my best selling miniature paintings.

'Kjealleleafde' (Friesian for Young Love)

I've desgined a series of little tote bags for the kids recently, 'Groetnis út Fryslân' featuring tow cows in love, a sweet sheep, a cow, a pig and a Friesian horse. These are so cute and perfect for the little one's first day in school. It holds their (note) books, their lunch box and who knows maybe some first love letters too! But they can use it for almost anything of course.
(It's the perfect size to carry daddy and mommy's iPad too)!

These cute bags are all available in my shop.

Banner!

The printer just delivered the banner for the upcoming fair in our town, it's fabulous!
(2 metres by 70 centimetres on sturdy vinyl)
I'm sure everyone will be able to find Foppe's stall!

'Groetnis út Fryslân' (greetings from Friesland)

I've designed four different greeting cards to promote our beautiful province Friesland/Fryslân. I'll be selling them as a set but how do you show four different images in one cello bag?
Well, just show each one of them on the backside of the wrapper!
I love designing my cards but I equally enjoy finding solotions for presenting/packing my artwork.

Portrait of Calico in the Peacock chair

Summers are always very busy at Foppe's Acre, there's plenty of work to do on our little farm; looking after the animals, doing my illustration work for studioMoor and than there are the commissions.
The client who commissioned this portrait of his sweet Calico gave me all the time I needed so I've continued sketching, tweaking details, adjusting composition and perfecting Calico's features in my cartoon-like style. I think I'm ready to start painting now. Stay tuned for future updates!

15-07-13

Nano!

I promised to post a photo of one of my latest commissions, may I introduce Nano!
Nano is painted in acryllic in a semi realistic style on a 8x8 inch stretched canvas.

The new owners are very happy with Nano's portrait and it was a joy to paint him.

It's in the bag!

Recently Christy from Australia ordered one of my new doggy bags which arrived yesterday. Because I made a portrait of her dog Jonah a while ago I decided to do a custom made bag for her featuring Jonah.
Christy posted this wonderful fun picture of Jonah taking the doggy bag a tad too litterally ;-) Thanks for the cute photo Christy! See Christy's post on Flickr

Cremation urn for Byrd

I'm honored to report that I did a commission to keep the memory of a beloved pet-companion alive.
Commissions like this aren't always the easiest ones to do because they are loaded with emotions for the client and thus for me, I love doing them. It's a privilege for me to portray a pet that has been so important to someone.

Custom made wooden cremation urn for a Byrd.
The urn is made from wood and closes securely with a lid. Painted in acryllic and it is varnished for extra durability.
The urn is not weather proof. This urn holds about one litre of ashes and only comes in one size (8,6 inch high, 4,3 inch diametre) , it is are large enough to hold the ahses of a small pet up to a large dog. All around the urn reads' I carry your heart', a poem by E.E. Cummings.

Foppe's Acre Originals Doggy Bag

Yay! after the success of the Foppe's Acre Originals Goodiebag we now have a second Tote-bag on offer. The one and only Doggy-Bag!

India White Rag

I've completely sold out my stock of 'The Sower' and 'Spring Clean' linos so had to print another edition (third). I found some excellent paper that works well for my work, Handmade India White Rag 150 gr, it's soft with a light texture and absorbs the ink perfectly. I'll use this from now on!

Jonah

Meet Jonah! Jonah is my good friend Christy Gallois' sweet dog and the latest whimsical portrait in my series of art cards. I've made Jonah's portrait as a present for Christy after she surprised me with a wonderful painted portrait of myself. It was a pleasure to create these cards for you Christy, I'm happy that you and Jonah are happy!

15 stages in designing Jonah's portrait.
Even though my whimsical animal portraits look simple and easy, capturing the essence of the animal isn't always that straight forward. Lots of tweaking details and altering the expression goes into it before I'm satisfied. But it's a lot of fun to do!

'Vogels en Huizen' exhibition at Oker Gallery, Amsterdam

Announcement of the Spring exhibition at Oker gallery in Amsterdam. I'm participating with my "Spring Clean" and "The Sower" linos plus the dust cloths and seedcards.

Wammes

Annelies Visser's sister Mirjam asked me to paint a little portrait of her cat Wammes recently, which I was honered to do. Wammes' portrait arrived at his new home and Annelies is very happy with it (and so am I!). She sent this sweet picture of Wammes and his painted portrait which warmed my heart.
Thanks Mirjam for the commission and thanks Annelies for this beautiful photo.

Foppe's Acre Originals Goodie Bag!

For a Spring promo-action for Foppe's Acre Originals I needed a goodiebag (of course).
So I designed one! Ain't it Foppe Fabulous?

Greeting Card 'The Sower' on growing paper

Greeting card and wall-art in one; 'The Sower' based on a lino cut by Peter Moorman on a square greeting card of a farmer sowing seeds and sharing his seeds with the birds in a Scandinavian Folk Art style.

The lino is printed on 60 gr organic paper with wild flower seeds sealed into it. The card measures 5 x 5 inch and comes with an ivory colored enevelope and a card with instructions.

Dust Cloth 'Spring Clean'

I've decided that printing the 'Spring Clean' lino on the dust cloth would be too time consuming and difficult (it would raise the prize of the item too much) so I tried textile transfer instead.
I printed the separate lino blocks, scanned them and joined them on the computer, printed them on the transfer and glued them to the fabric with an iron. Easy peasy, the result is beyond my expectations. Looks like I've got my "Spring Clean' dust cloth afterall!
